How to Shrink Graphic Tees

“I need to shrink my tee!” With summer quickly approaching, it’s likely that you are getting ready to say goodbye to your winter wardrobe and welcome in the warmer weather.

However, before you toss out all of your bulky sweaters and long sleeves, make sure you have shrunk them first!

It is easy to forget about the clothing items in the back of our drawers or shelves that we don’t wear on a regular basis. If not cleaned properly, these items can stain other clothing or otherwise damage them while sitting unused for months at a time.

The simplest way to ensure this doesn’t happen is by shrinking your clothes before putting them away for good. While this may sound complicated, it’s actually an easy process once you know how!

Steps To Shrink Your Graphic Tees

1. Fill a large pot with water, and bring it to a boil on the stove.

2. Once the water begins to bubble, reduce the heat so that it can simmer.

3. Carefully place your shirt into the hot pot of water using a pair of tongs or a spoon, making sure not to burn yourself in the process! Allow it to sit for about 15 seconds so that it absorbs some of the hot water from the bottom.

4. Lift up your shirt immediately, and run cold water over it until you’ve cooled off its temperature completely (at least 10 seconds).

Using ice cubes is an easy way to speed up this process if desired! You’ll want to avoid or twisting your garment too much while cooling it off, as this will cause the graphic to stretch and warp while wet.

5. Place your shirt on a flat surface or hang it up using a hanger designed for drying clothes.

Allow the shirt to dry overnight. It may take longer depending on how thick and damp the shirt was at first!

That’s all there is to it! Once you’ve shrunk your graphic tees, you’ll want to make sure that they’re stored in a safe place where they won’t get ruined by other clothing items touching them from behind.

Such as in between two pieces of cardboard or inside a plastic storage container with tight fitting lids made specifically for storing fabrics. Good luck shrinking your tee shirts!”

Don’t have a pot?

All you need is a large saucepan. Fill it with water and drop your shirt into the boiling water for 5 to 10 seconds. You can then toss your tee in the dryer on a low setting to help it dry faster, but this isn’t necessary if you’re in a hurry.”

Tee Shrinking Tips

For a quick fix, fill a pot with water and heat the water on high. Once the water reaches a boil, drop your shirt into the pot for 5 to 10 seconds. The hot water will shrink your tee right away—no drying overnight required!

Not all graphic tees are made from 100 percent cotton. If you have a 50/50 or non-cotton tee, you’ll want to avoid using boiling hot water as it can make bits of polyester fabric fall off. In addition to this tip, be sure to find out what kind of material your tee is made from before shrinking it.”
